CENTERPIECE SCREENING
CITY OF BORDERS
Sunday, June 28
4:45pm
In the heart of Jerusalem stands an unlikely symbol of unity: a gay bar called Shushan. This award-winning documentary goes inside this vibrant sanctuary where people of all nationalities, religious affiliations and sexual orientations create a community and find an island of peace in a land of war.
Though Palestinians and Israelis commonly view each other as enemies, when they all meet under one roof in Shushan they find acceptance, hinting at a society to which they could all truly belong. This is a resilient community that fights daily not just for dignity but for its very existence.
Superbly filmed and edited, City of Borders makes for compelling viewing and will keep you enrapt to the very end. Through joys and sadnesses complicated by political and racial realities beyond their control, the deeply personal stories of these brave men and women demonstrate the diversity of queer life in the region. Seeing how a this community struggles to merely exist in this day and age will shake you up and remind you of the universal connection LGBT people share in our struggle for acceptance.
